A shelf can be a purchase or a fixture. What does disposable furniture actually cost?
Start with the waste. The EU discards roughly 10.78 million tonnes of furniture every year, and between 80 and 90 percent of it is incinerated or sent to landfill. Around 10 percent gets recycled. The American figures are no kinder. The US EPA counted 12.1 million tons of discarded furniture in 2018, the last year it measured the category. Less than half of one percent was recycled.
The cause is material, not laziness. Flat-pack furniture is mostly particleboard: wood chips bonded with resin, wrapped in a plastic laminate, held together with cam locks and glue. Those layers cannot be separated economically, so recyclers reject them. When the laminate chips or the board swells in a humid bathroom, the whole piece goes in a skip. It was designed for one short life.
The arithmetic nobody runs at checkout
Price per year is the honest metric. A particleboard bathroom shelf costs perhaps €20 and survives four years of steam before its edges swell. That is €5 per year, plus the afternoon spent replacing it, plus another object in a landfill. Run the same decade twice and you have bought that shelf five times.

What makes a fixture permanent?
The material carries the load
Steel does not swell in humidity and it does not warp. We cut most of our pieces from 3mm cold-rolled sheet and weld the joints instead of bolting them, so there is no fastener to loosen over years of use. The finish protects for decades
Powder coating is not paint. The powder is applied electrostatically and cured at around 200°C into a bonded skin that resists humidity and everyday knocks. We finish in named colors: Chalk, Graphite, Slate, and on some pieces Linen and Umber, each specified by RAL code so a second piece ordered years later matches exactly. The mounting decides whether it stays
A permanent fixture needs a mounting you trust. Smaller pieces like the AIKI come with a choice of screw or high-bond tape, so renters can commit without drilling. Shelves mount on concealed screws rated well past their working load. A fixture that holds firm gets left alone. A fixture that sags gets replaced, whatever it is made of.
Regulation is catching up with disposability
The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation entered into force in July 2024, and Digital Product Passports begin rolling out in 2026, starting with iron and steel, with furniture scheduled to follow. The direction is plain: products will have to declare what they are made of and how they can be repaired or recycled. A welded steel shelf answers easily.
