The question arrives weekly: can a powder coated steel shelf live outside? The honest answer needs three parts: what powder coat is, what actually kills coated steel, and where the line runs between a wet room and the weather.

What the coating actually is

Powder coating is not paint in the everyday sense. Dry polymer powder is charged electrostatically, sprayed onto bare steel, and baked until it flows into one continuous skin, 60 to 80 micrometres thick. At ATYP the steel is phosphate treated first, which bonds the skin chemically and blocks oxidation from starting underneath it. The result resists chipping, moisture, and everyday knocks far better than brushed or sprayed paint, which is why we coat every piece this way in our Slovak workshop.

Wet rooms: this is home ground

A bathroom is humid, not hostile. Steam condenses, splash dries, and a sealed powder skin gives water nothing to reach. Three things separate a bathroom from a balcony.

Standing water. Rain sits in corners and fixing holes for hours. Any breach in the coating, even a scratch from installation, becomes a slow rust point because the water never leaves.

UV. Sunlight degrades polymers. Architectural powder systems rated for facades exist, but a coating chosen for interior colour accuracy will fade and chalk faster in direct sun. Darker shades show it first.

Salt and grit. Coastal air and winter grit are aggressive electrolytes. They find every edge and accelerate whatever corrosion has started.

None of this means coated steel fails outside overnight. It means the failure modes exist outdoors and mostly do not exist in your bathroom, and a maker who tells you otherwise is selling, not informing.

Inspect fixing points each spring; that is where trouble starts.

Is powder coated steel rust proof?

No coating makes steel rust proof. A continuous powder skin over phosphate-treated steel keeps water and air away from the metal, which prevents rust for as long as the skin stays intact. Indoors that is easily years; outdoors it depends on exposure and maintenance.

Can I use an ATYP shelf in a shower?

In the bathroom yes, and near the shower yes. Keep it out of the direct jet and wipe off standing water, and the finish holds. That use is covered by the two-year guarantee.

Does powder coating fade in sunlight?

Direct, sustained UV will slowly fade any interior-grade coating, dark shades first. Behind glass or in normal room light the effect is negligible.
