How High to Hang Towel Hooks in a Small Bathroom: A Height Guide

KANSO Towel Holder in Graphite powder-coated steel mounted on a small bathroom wall by ATYP Slovakia

TL;DR: Hang a towel hook so the base of the hook sits 165 to 175 cm from the floor. That keeps a full bath towel off the ground without a stretch to reach it. In a small bathroom, mount the hook near airflow, keep multiple hooks at least 23 cm apart, and choose one that projects only a few centimetres from the wall.

ATYP builds bathroom hardware from 3mm cold-rolled steel in a workshop in Bánovce nad Bebravou, Slovakia. Height is the one measurement most people get wrong with a towel hook, and it is the easiest to fix before the drill comes out. Hang the hook too low and a bath towel pools on the floor. Hang it too high and shorter members of the household cannot reach it. This guide gives the numbers in centimetres first, then shows how the KANSO Towel Holder in Graphite and the AIKI Wall Hook in Slate, both powder-coated steel, each solve the problem in a tight room.

How high should a towel hook be?

For a bath towel, mount the hook so the base of it sits 165 to 175 cm above the finished floor. In inches that is roughly 65 to 70. A folded bath towel drops around 70 to 90 cm from the hook, so at this height it hangs clear of the floor with room left over. Push toward 175 cm if everyone in the house is tall. Stay near 165 cm for an average-height household.

Compare that to a towel bar. The industry standard for a bar is 122 cm (48 inches) to the centre, low enough to drape a towel and grab it without bending. A hook sits higher because the towel hangs from a single point rather than folding over a rail. Same towel, different geometry, different height.

Bath towel, hand towel, robe: three heights

One height does not cover every towel. Match the number to the job.

Bath towel

165 to 175 cm. This is the height that keeps a large towel drying in open air instead of bunched against the skirting.

Hand towel

Around 120 cm works near a sink, roughly 10 to 20 cm above the vanity top. A hand towel is short, so a lower hook still lets it hang free.

Robe or bathrobe

140 to 160 cm. A robe is heavy and long, and it needs the extra height so the hem stays off the floor. If you hang both a robe and a bath towel, give each its own hook rather than stacking them.

Why a small bathroom changes the math

In a compact room, projection matters as much as height. A hook stands 5 to 8 cm off the wall. A towel bar with a draped towel eats 15 to 20 cm of floor-facing space. In a room where the door swings close to the wall, those extra centimetres decide whether the door clears the towel.

Drying is the second constraint. A small bathroom holds humidity, and a towel on a hook has less airflow than one spread across a bar. Mount the hook where air moves: near the extractor fan, beside a window, or on the wall the door opens toward. If you are choosing hardware for the whole room, our guide to choosing wall hooks for a small bathroom covers the trade-offs before you commit to a layout.

The back of the door is the classic small-bathroom spot. It is out of the main sightline and it uses a surface that would otherwise stay empty. Find the centre of the door with a tape measure, mark it, and mount at the same 165 to 175 cm you would use on a wall.

How far apart should two towel hooks be?

Keep at least 23 cm (about 9 inches) between hooks. Any closer and two hanging towels press together, trap moisture, and stay damp. In a household with more than one person, two or three hooks in a row beat one crowded hook. Space them evenly, keep them level, and give each towel its own air.

If wall width is tight, a single fixed point that holds several towels can be cleaner than a run of separate hooks. That is the case for a dedicated holder, which we come to next.

Hook, holder, or shelf: pick the piece for the wall

Height is settled. Now the hardware. ATYP makes three answers to the towel question, and each configures to order in powder-coated steel.

The AIKI Wall Hook is the minimal option at 19 EUR. It comes in Chalk, Graphite, and Slate, with a screw or tape mount, and its slim profile suits a wall behind a door or beside a shower. Set one at bath-towel height and a second lower for a hand towel.

The KANSO Towel Holder gives you a bar in three widths: S at 37 cm, M at 60 cm, and L at 97 cm. A bar spreads a towel flat, which dries it faster than a hook. Mount the bar centre at 122 cm and you are at the standard reach height.

The TUSCANY Towel Shelf combines a shelf with a hanging rail, in M (60 cm) or L (97 cm). It earns its place on a wall by holding folded towels above and a hung one below, useful when floor storage is not an option. Browse the full range in bathroom accessories, or start from a blank spec on the customization page if you want a width the catalogue does not list.

How to mark and mount the hook

Measure from the finished floor, not the tile line or the skirting. Mark 170 cm as your default for a bath towel, then hold the hook against the mark and check it against the person who uses the room most. Adjust up or down 5 cm to fit.

Choose the mount for the surface. A screw fixing into a stud or a wall plug holds the most weight and suits a wet bath towel. Tape mounting works on tile or a rented wall where drilling is off the table, and every ATYP hook ships with both options. For the full comparison, read adhesive versus screw mounting before you decide. Whatever you pick, the finish is powder-coated steel rated to resist humidity, backed by our 5-Year Craftsmanship Guarantee.

FAQ

How high should a towel hook be for a bath towel?

Mount the base of the hook 165 to 175 cm from the finished floor, roughly 65 to 70 inches. A folded bath towel drops 70 to 90 cm, so at that height it hangs clear of the floor.

What is the height difference between a towel bar and a towel hook?

A towel bar centres at about 122 cm (48 inches). A towel hook sits higher, at 165 to 175 cm, because the towel hangs from a single point instead of folding over a rail.

How high should towel hooks be for children?

Around 90 cm (36 inches) from the floor lets a child aged four to eight reach the hook and actually hang the towel up. Add a second hook at adult height so one wall serves both.

How far apart should two towel hooks be?

Keep at least 23 cm (about 9 inches) between hooks. Closer than that and two towels touch, trap moisture, and dry slowly.

Can I hang a towel hook on the back of the bathroom door?

Yes. Find the centre of the door with a tape measure and mount at the same 165 to 175 cm you would use on a wall. A tape-mounted hook avoids drilling into the door.
